Here’s something to make you feel old and out of touch. YouTube has compiled a mashup of its memorable moments, stars, and memes from 2014, and I… don’t recognize ANY of it. Seriously, NOTHING. NO ONE. It’s like I’m like Encino Man, thawed out of a block of ice, and trying to make sense of your strange new world. Which is weird – I am on the internet nine hours a day. I should know these things. But except for Big Bird, mutant spider-dog, John Oliver, and possibly Tyler Oakley, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT’S GOING ON. Who the fuck are you people? Are they… our new celebrities?
All I know is somebody spent a shit-ton of money on this video. For what?
From the DW:
In the 2014 edition of its annual video mashup of the year’s top memes and memorable moments, YouTube brought together over 100 creators and enlisted the help of DJ Earworm for the soundtrack.
“Wired” has a good piece explaining the background on these Rewind videos and how this most recent one was created. There’s also a behind the scenes video of the process, which kicked off back in July.
YouTube also released a list of the top trending videos of the year, with “Spider Dog” winning 2014, and the super viral catcalling video rounding out the top 10.
Why not watch this more comforting year-end review from Facebook (who incurred our wrath this year with its “real names” policy, but let’s let bygone be bygones)
