YouTuber Shane Dawson, who shot to fame by posting countless racist videos and podcasts, posted a 20-minute apology, saying he’s “willing to lose everything” to make amends for years of sketches and jokes involving racial stereotypes, including blackface and slurs.
Dawson said he was prompted to post his latest apology after Jenna Marbles announced she was ending her channel because of past racially insensitive videos.
Dawson lays out what he says is his path to understanding, and he apologized to a number of people who had tried to get him to stop over the years. He also apologized directly to beauty YouTuber James Charles for his role in the recent internet pile-on.
Toward the end of the video, Dawson makes a striking claim:
At this point, realizing how many people I’ve hurt or how many people I’ve inspired to say awful things or do anything awful, to finally just own up to all of this and be accountable is worth losing everything to me.
Whether or not Dawson’s apology gets accepted remains to be seen. What concrete actions will he take to make up for all the hatred and ugliness that helped enrich him and make him famous?
