As racial reckoning continues to ripple through popular culture, YouTuber Jenna Marbles shared a message apologizing for jokes that were criticized as racist and announcing the end of her channel.
Marbles, aka Jenna Mourey, was one of the earlier YouTube breakout stars, but some of her comedic videos had been criticized as racist, including a racist caricature of Asians, and her impression of Nicki Minaj in 2011 that critics said was blackface. She said that was not her intent, but she now regrets darkening her skin for the impression. In the video, she says:
I want to hold myself accountable. And it’s painful to do it, and it’s not fun, and it hurts. And I’m ashamed of things I’ve done and said in my past, but it’s important… I hope this felt like something that you needed to hear from me. I’m not sure that I want to continue doing stuff on this channel. And I don’t wanna put anything out in the world that’s gonna hurt anybody. So I need to be done with this channel for now. Or forever.
Marbles set all of the criticized videos to private, but will leave the channel up.
