The other day a HUGE sinkhole appeared in Sunset Park in the middle of the street at the corner of 64th Street and 5th Avenue yesterday – or, as the MTA initially phrased it in an alert, a sick [sic] hole. I’ve lived in New York a LONG time but I had to look up both sinkholes (it is one word) and Sunset Park. I know where it is in Brooklyn, but I never lived there, so I was curious… and sinkholes, you always hear about, but never thought that much about. According Wikipedia;
“Sinkholes occur in urban areas due to water main breaks or sewer collapses when old pipes give way. the substantial weight of the new material can trigger an underground collapse of supporting material, thus causing a sinkhole.”
Years of resurfacing a road when there is actually little underneath to support it can cause one and they do swallow people’s houses pretty regularly. Google “sinkhole” and you’ll be amazed.
