WOW co-founder Fenton Bailey expresses himself beautifully. And I’m not just talking about the British accent. He’s my friend for decades (and sort of my boss) and damn it, he’s a better writer than I am!
“Hillary Clinton Is Done Trying To Be Liked”
“Her statements are unvarnished, sometimes even frankly resentful. She says the kind of thing that would be disastrous if she were actually in power”
Kind of crazy to say when the reality is that the man currently in power says and does disastrous things on a daily basis with zero consequence. The mystery of the negative feedback loop that has dogged Clinton – and the no less mysterious positive feedback loop that has elevated Trump – can only be explained by the inherent bigotry and hatred we nurse towards women… it’s even casually on display in this column – written by a woman.
Last night at Sundance I saw Miss Americana, the Lana Wilson’s empowering doc in which Taylor Swift self-examines her reputation’s rollercoaster ride. How she was first robbed by Kanye then re-assaulted by him – much more successfully the second time in turning the public against her (even though he was the one at fault). Then, adding insult to injury, she was pilloried in court for countersuing the douche who in plain sight sexually molested her. As Taylor talks us through it, we get such an intimate insight into deep-rooted misogyny. Next it will be Hillary Clinton’s turn when her documentary series, Hillary premieres – also at Sundance. And for sharing their wounds and telling it like it is both are bound to get more flack.
And yet it’s all so abundantly clear and has been for years. In the White House a man who assaulted / raped / groped and paid off scores of women. By. His. Own. Admission. Fox News – his propaganda channel – is plagued with scandals of sexual abuse for which it has paid out for over $100 million to date. And women still support Trump. Evangelicals proclaim him to be the chosen one.
But as I have painfully personally learned these past couple of years, it is often the most obvious truths, the ones right in front of our eyes, that we deny the most.
And in America today those who try to get us to see the truth get savaged the most. Perhaps this has to be the way of a people who began with genocide, wiping out the Native American population whose land this was long before we showed up and stole it. How else to follow that than by enslaving black people while pretending that a self-evident truth is that all men (and women) are created equal.
So self-evident we needn’t concern ourselves with living that truth; go ahead, rip that baby out of its mother arms seeking asylum at the border! Shoot up those innocent people with your AK47 wearing your MAGA hat because you don’t like Muslims miscegenation or Mondays!
I’m reading Larry Kramer’s epic The American People a riotous, furious history of gay America. Because – hello! – in case you didn’t know America is gay, and has been gay for a long time. Alexander Hamilton. Gay. No, it’s not in the musical. Like so much else that is gay it’s been erased from the history books. Violently and murderously erased in support of a fake idea that gay is unnatural, ungodly – a falsehood often promoted by married Christian Republicans who get caught taking it up the arse.
As artist David Wojnarowicz said of his AIDS diagnosis:
“When I was told I had contracted this virus it didn’t take me long to realize that I had contracted a diseased society as well”.
And so here we are. Never more sick and diseased than right now with Roy Cohen’s protege as President, hailed by Christians as their savior, clueless as to how closely he matches their own biblical description of the Anti-Christ.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
Great idea. We just can’t seem to stomach it, and turn on those – Taylor, Hilary, Greta, and so many more women, queers and people of color – who live lives that remind us of this self-evident truth
