This star of a massively popular WOW franchise, who is, at turns, devastatingly charming and despicably villainous, just turned in the PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME at the Toronto Film Festival, easily outshining the seasoned veterans he co-starred with. I guess he proved he’s more than a reality star! See who it is after the jump…
Why it’s Ryan Searhant!
He starred in indie director Noah Baumbach’s While We Were Young, the follow up to his critically acclaimed Frances Ha. The fim stars Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried, and Charles Grodin – who are, let’s face it, no slouches in the acting department – but it’s Ryan whom the critics have hailed as the film’s standout performer. The Huffington Post went so far as to title their review “The Guy from Million Dollar Listing is the Breakout Star of Noah Baumbach’s New Movie”!!
Serhant is the movie equivalent of street construction on a quiet morning. He plays a hedge-fund manager named Dave (Hedge-Fund Dave as the credits note) who may help Stiller’s Josh fund his six-and-a-half hour documentary about America’s racist prison system, the Turkish economy and a bunch of other stuff? It’s not really clear, because Josh lost the thread somewhere around 2008. “So it’s like ‘Black Shawshank Redemption,’ but real,” an oblivious Dave says as he listens to Josh’s pitch. Dave is an unrepentant monster who watches “Mad Men” for tips on how to be a douche bag; he probably idolized Ellis in “Die Hard.” Serhant is so good at being a bro, someone should probably cast him in the “Entourage” movie.
Congratulations, Ryan! We can now say we knew you when!
Next stop: THE OSCARS!
Interestingly, the OTHER standout was Adam Horowitz aka Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys who apparently plays the perfect embodiment of an average, upper-middle class dad, complete with pleated khakis and baby sling. Can’t wait to see this!
