Bar d’O has now passed into NYC nightlife legend. It was created by Jean Marc Houmard with Joey Arias, the late, lovely, legendary Edwidge Belmore and Raven O. (Then, they gave birth to Sherry Vine) It ran for 10 years in the West Village and featured TOO many amazing performances to count…
Wowlebrity photographer Ruben Natal-San Miguel just shot Raven O and put us in touch to diss about the upcoming anniversary and reunion…
Hey, there! Ruben just sent me some great pics of you! Looking good!
So, is it possible? It’s really the 25th anniversary of Bar d’O…?
This Xmas it will be 25th year anniversary… well, December.
I know I’m an old cunt.
How does that feel, hunty?
Lol, I feel cunt, bitch.
Is there a reunion concert planned?
We haven’t started planning it. It’s only August…
True. So, I know Joey 1000 years. I met him when I first came to the city in ’80-81. When did you guys first meet?
Circa 80 whatevs? Do you remember how you met?
Child, I’m old my memory is fucked I only remember faces and cocks.
Really? THE first time you met Joey Arias? A total blank? You saw her perform? Tripped over her at the Mineshaft…?
Joeys says it was Limelight. I don’t remember. I never went to the Mineshaft. (laughs)
I was not a regular at Bar d’O but I did go a few times and I must say, it was unlike anything NYC had ever seen, before or since. Gender-fucked jazz, trippy coolness with humor, wit and style and such VOICES. OMG! How does it feel to you looking back?
I’m still doing it so it’s my life. I never look back I’m always moving forward. BarD’0 was a time and place it’s in the past. Where it belongs it nice to do reunions and tributes, but we all have moved on.
Well, that’s a good attitude. It’s a NYC milestone you guys should be proud of…
All the amazing magic we did back then is still happening at every gig we all do. We never stopped.
Yes. I have some good footage of you Sherry and Joey at that Mac party a few years back. That was a reunion of sorts… I’ll dig it up. (below)
Awesome, that was so much fun…
It was really some synchronicity which is what you always pull off together. Jazz musicians who can play off each other with precision. Amazing.
Where are you performing next?
I’m very excited about Pangea it’s my new home doing my drag and singing jazz it’s time all of these amazing young queens see some old school fierceness.
It’s a great venue. Hey, thanks so much for doing this!
The next Pangea shows are Sept 6, Nov. 1, Dec 6 at 7PM, 178 Second Avenue, NYC. You can get tickets here.
As I post this, Odyssey’s Native New Yorker is playing in the background… swear. I’d like to hear Raven, Joey & Sherry and do THEIR version of this NYC anthem…
You grew up ridin’ the subways, running with people
Up in Harlem, down on Broadway
You’re no tramp, but you’re no lady, talkin’ that street talk
You’re the heart and soul of New York City
And love, love is just a passing word
It’s the thought you had in a taxi cab that got left on the curb
When he dropped you off and he stated firm
Oh, oh, oh (oh, oh, oh)
You’re a native New Yorker
You should know the score by now (you should know by now)
You’re a native New Yorker
