Pittsburgh nightlife fixture Moon Baby has been hustling her drag meets art meets musical performance meets video art showcase for years but will reach new heights of stardom with the #WOWExclusive premiere of her new single “Everything Is Cute To Me” with a music video that will literally blow your (load) mind.
Gag on it here:
After you’ve picked your jaw up off the ground, we sat down with Sam Perry (Moon Baby’s boy half) to talk Mandy Moore, performance art, and who she’s rooting for on All Stars 2.
WOW: For those that don’t know, Moon Baby and I met on the internet through our love of drag and video art. You’ve made a ton of music videos. You remind me of Beyonce and Grimes’ love child. What is it about video making that coincides with your music?
MB: I think video makes music accessible and allows me as an artist to show more of myself. Making videos is intoxicating. I feel like Mandy Moore every morning when I wake up.
WOW: Can you describe your sound sonically to our audience that may not be familiar with your music?
MB: I’m a barbershop quartet having group sex in the body of Natalie Ambruglia.
WOW: Where did “Moon Baby” come from? Everytime I tell my friends your name, they LOVE it.
MB: I had really fallen for my first guy. And when i realized this guy was never going to be about it, I was so depressed at work that my boss offered to give me a rescued kitten. In my mind her name was moon baby. I got home from work and told my roommates and one of them was allergic to cats, so I stood on my coffee table and screamed “if I can’t have the moon baby, I’ll be the moon baby.”
WOW: Tell us about the new video and the new album. What are you most excited about?
MB: I am so lucky to have this video. The arts and queer communities of pittsburgh are intertwined and loving toward one another. I sent this track to my friend Kevin Ramser and he created a group project out of it for a CMU animations class. The technology we got to use for free is unbelievable. The track I’m most excited about and terrified of is a song I wrote for my roommate who died this year. Her death was the impetus for this whole outpouring of creativity.
MB:It’s something that I love to do and I think it’s good for a drag show to have range. If Bambi Deerest can have you snapping your fingers and Karmageddon can give you a weird boner and then I can have you crying and calling your mom, you’ve received SHOWZ, girl.
WOW: When did you realize you could combine drag, songwriting, and music all together?
MB: It was born out of necessity. My senior year of college I was a folk singer called Danke the Cowboy, but when I wanted my act to be more queer, it was a logical step. My drag elevates my music and my music elevates my drag.

MB: Transformations is spectacular. But I mean. What Would Jake Wear. No one venmo’d me into saying that.
WOW: Who are you rooting for on All Stars Season 2?
MB: They are all superb. Alaska is amazing and from Pittsburgh but I’m really just hoping Nicole Paige Brookes pops out of a box on episode one and serves it to the kids.
MB: The album comes out August 26th as a companion piece to Godney’s Glory. After that, im saving up for a pair of Sophia Webster heels, kissing everyone I can, and beginning work on a series of books about home life starting with an instructional poetry book called How Witches Douche.
Make sure you get Moon Baby’s album on iTunes on August 26th, hunties!
