Throttling from the mind the imagination of writer/recording artist/New York City bon vivant Greg Scarnici, Levonia Jenkins is the newest sensation of the holiday season. Her new show Levonia Jenkins XXXMas Hollagay Concert Extravaganza is playing for two consecutive shows at the legendary Stonewall Inn in New York City to sold out audiences who are reveling in her unique brand of humor and…singing voice. I sat down with this holiday sensation to talk about partnering up with Bridget Everett and Cecily Strong for these performances and how Levonia Jenkins spends the holiday season (hint: reruns of The Ropers are involved)
Michael Cook: What made Levonia Jenkins decide to put together a brand spanking new Christmas show?
Levonia Jenkins: A few years ago, Levonia released a teaser of filthy Christmas parodies and her loins have been aching to flesh out the songs into longer, uncut versions. Those vile ditties then turned into…Levonia Jenkins’ XXXMas Hollagay Concert Extravaganza!
MC: So take me back; when did Levonia Jenkins break into the performance and music scene? How would you describe your performance and style to someone who’s never seen it?
LJ: Levonia was created during the taping of an impromptu video for YouTube called Vogue Revolution on the roof of my summer house on Fire Island back in like 2010 with my friend and frequent collaborator, Johnny Lopez. A few years later, Levonz started releasing 90s-inspired house tracks, kicking it off with her most polarizing “hit” to date, “So Cunt.” As for her style, she has a very Rainbow Shop meets Strawberry’s animal-print kind of vibe. Her inspirations are middle-aged women from Brooklyn and Queens working office jobs in the city who ride the F train and like to wear animal print.
MC: How did you decide what guests you would invite to the show?
LJ: Cecily Strong came to Levonia’s show in L.A. last summer and afterwards told me she loved drag queens and dressing up, so when I started writing the show, I instantly thought of her. As for Bridget Everett – I’ve known her ever since we did a show together years ago and as anyone who has seen her knows, Bridget is one of the most powerful live performers out there, so there was no question I wanted her to be a part of this, too. They’re both so dynamic and fun – I love working with performers who light up a room.
MC: So tell me; Cecily Strong. What’s it’s like working with her?
LJ: Cecily is a total bitch lol jk! I always tell Cecily she’s aptly named because she’s such an insanely strong performer. Sometimes, the writers at SNL will throw a new script at her the day we have a live show after a news story breaks, and not only will she nail whatever political impression they toss at her, she’ll make it seem like she was rehearsing that damn sketch all week long and not for like twenty minutes.
MC: How does Levonia Jenkins spend the holiday season? Any New Years Resolutions to speak of?
LJ: Levonia likes to spend the hollagays watching her favorite progrums on her VCR, like The Ropers and Love Boat, while sipping Jacquin’s Crème de cacao and entertaining gentlemen callers as she waits for the Christmas shrimp dumplings to be delivered. As for New Years Resolutions, she plans on deleting more PNPBBOnly queens on Facebook.
MC: Bridget Everett is a downtown legend. What’s it like working with someone who’s just starting to enjoy the results of her hard work?
LJ: Bridget’s a fuckin bitch too lol jk, I love her! Like lots of performers who find success after years of hard work, Bridget is grounded and so much fun to be around. She hasn’t let her fame or success change her one bit. I mean, she’s so down to earth, she agreed to perform in a bearded drag queen’s Christmas show on a Monday night at Stonewall for Lord Baby Jesus in the Manger’s sake!
MC: Rumors abound; are we getting more music from you? Tell me it’s true, the fans are demanding it.
LJ: The fans – ha! Actually, Levonia is putting the finishing touches on her next cassingle, “Fifty Years Old” and is also writing another song called “17 Likes.” She’s hoping to release them the same night Beyonce releases new music so they can get into another Twitter war.
MC: What would you as the established Levonia tell the Levonia just starting off performing?
LJ: There’s an established Levonia?!?!
