Our exciting new series, How’s Your Head, Hun? premieres today on WOW Presents Plus and BBC Three! It stars Michelle Visage and her adorable family – hubby David, daughter Lola, and Lol’s BF Dylan as they navigate life in lockdown. I spoke to David about working with his wife and daughter, and what advice he has for other parents going through this…
I imagine living AND working with your wife is very different than just living with her… What have you learned about Michelle that you didn’t know? And what have you learned about yourself?
I learned I can actually work with my wife! Lol… we made a super cheap film together in 1999 called Maybe It’s Me and I was convinced then we couldn’t work together and one of us might just use a pillow on the other in the middle of the night. (they know i’m kidding right?) However, in Michelle’s defense, she was 20 weeks into her pregnancy with our first born. It was a rough shoot but so much fun. This time round it just seems to be pure fun with so few difficulties. We know we’re doing something good and we are just being ourselves so it’s super enjoyable. What I’ve learned about myself is that, yes, I can be funny. I make a good foil to Michelle. But all of that might not be self-aware, which I think makes it that much more charming.
You are spending quarantine with your daughter Lola’s boyfriend, Dylan. That’s… got to be a unique situation. How is everyone handling it?
Oh, I think it was rough at first. For me. I can certainly be a traditional dad who wants to make sure his daughter is safe. But now with this pandemic… all bets are off as well as old ways of thinking about situations. I’m glad she’s in quarantine with someone she really enjoys. They do love each other and look out for one another and he’s a great kid so that makes it much easier. But yes, in the beginning I was always making sure he was not just social distancing six feet with Lola but dad distancing of 20 feet. But that’s completely different now. We all live a pretty happy existence.
You’re about to be a HUGE STAR in the UK and on WOW Presents Plus… ARE YOU READY FOR IT?
Yes! Bring it on!! Um… no. I would be very surprised if I got that sort of attention. I know we’re having fun doing what we’re doing but it’s more about all of us being in this together and trying to make it through a truly historical rough period of time. If I can help my wife deliver a little bit of relief then that’s all that matters (BUT… please direct all inquiries to my agent, manager, PR rep, personal assistant, fan club president, etc- PS I HAVE NONE OF THAT.) :)
What piece of advice would you give couples during lockdown?
Throw the damn rules out. This is no time to be pretending like things are normal. Normal is gone. Likely for good. It’s time to pull that better side out and live with it as if every day matters because seeing what’s happening to the planet makes me think we’ll all be remembered for how we acted during this time. Be your best self, not your judgmental self. Show your love every day. And appreciate even more those trips to quiet spaces like the garage or backyard. Okay, gave you several bits of advice. You’re welcome.
And what piece of advice would you give parents trying to keep it together during lockdown?
Just open the door and the let the kids go… NO! just kidding. More of what I was saying: show those little babies comfort, love, and forgiveness. Don’t let this crisis think it’s an excuse for trying to change anyone. Be there for them because this is unlike anything we’ve every gone through before. And turn on the slo-mo with your children, meaning… what a time, what a gift!- we get to spend all this great alone time with our kids. That sounds rough maybe for some but our old world made it seem we were all too busy to spend this time together. Well, now we’re together in quarantine: treat every day like it’s a long weekend or a mini vacation. Play board games with the kiddies, have great conversations with them, teach them to swear responsibly, love them, hug them… before you know it we’ll all lose this time and be back to some kind busy. And that old way really didn’t work, did it?
It did not. And I can’t wait for more episodes! Congrats!
