Being out of touch is a matter of degree, according to Gen Z tastemakers. For instance, someone who is basic but self-aware is technically more “cheugy.” It kind of means knowing you’re trying too hard, and it usually applies to a slightly lame millennial aesthetic.
Cheugy (pronounced CHOO-gee, with gee as in “geese”) got its start on TikTok and has been getting a lot of buzz this week. SNL has been dipping its toes into cheug life, like this sketch about those kooky wooden signs beloved by millennial cheugs:

That’s not to say that Gen Z can’t have elements of the cheug, though I would argue that Now United performing “Let The Music Move You” came about courtesy of some millennial marketers:
