Traci Lords break-out role in John Waters‘ Cry-Baby turns 30 this year! And Lords just opened last night in the revival of Women Behind Bars with the legendary Mink Stole, a frequent Waters collaborator. Her co-stars, you might know from RuPaul’s Drag Race; Eureka O’Hara, Chi-Chi Devane, and Ginger Minj along with veteran drag star Miss CoCo Peru.
Tom Eyen’s classic comedy sends up 50s prison exploitation films. Originally produced in NYC, it was revived a year later with Waters’ longtime muse, Divine.
Lords recently told People her thoughts on the past present and future,
“I wasn’t going to let anybody write me off, that I was too young and that I had too much going for me and that I really felt like I was out to prove them wrong. That was the fire beneath me that,
‘You know what? Whatever you guys think label me however you want.’
And you know my, my motto has always been,
‘Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise.’
And it still is.”
Women Behind Bars directed by Scott Thompson is at The Montalbán Theatre in Hollywood, January 24, 2020 – February 2, 2020. Get tickets here.
