Attendees at Sunday’s Wojnarowicz: F—k You F-ggot F—ker screening at the 2021 Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival got to learn about artist and icon David Wojnarowicz and his powerful and unapologetic way of seeing the world which gave voice to queer rights at a critical time in American history. Following the film was a compelling Q&A discussion with the film’s Emmy Award-winning director and producer, Chris McKim and Homophilia‘s Dave Holmes.
“The project started in July of 2017, so we were about six months into the Trump administration at that point, and I was really losing my mind trying to find something that would make me feel better about things and find a way to make a difference,” said McKim on the red carpet. “While I was aware of David’s work before that, it really wasn’t until that point where I realized just how incredible the work was and how much it spoke to exactly what was happening even before the pandemic, the insurrection, and the election. it was really David’s voice and what he had to say for his life at the time that really spoke to what was happening today that really drew me into telling his story.”
He continued, “I think as David says in the film, ‘if the work we make as artists doesn’t contribute to the resistance, then we’re helping the system of control become perfect,’ so I think that what’s important is that people should learn from David but also find ways to express themselves and feel free to put that in their work and put that out in the world because that’s ultimately what’s going to make a difference.”
