The rumors are swirling that Disney is looking to reboot Indiana Jones and treat the franchise like the Bond movies – bringing in a fresh actor every decade or so to keep the films from getting creaky. Who does Disney have in mind to play Indy? Bradley Cooper, according to – the internet. Cooper would certainly fit the bill – and at 39, he could easily carry the franchise into the next decade. So, what about Harrison Ford? George Lucas once said that Ford “IS Indiana Jones. If Indiana Jones wasn’t in it, you’d have to call it Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis.” Thanks, George, but at 71, Ford’s no longer a box office draw and although the last film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did well at the box office, it was not treated kindly by critics and is not well-liked by fans, either. (I liked it, although the ending was a doozy) So, what about Shia LaBeouf, who co-starred as Indy son in that film, and who Steven Spielberg was apparently grooming to take the franchise lead from Ford? Oh, right – I forgot, he’s “not famous anymore.” Well, Disney dropped $4 billion for the rights to both Star Wars and the Indiana Jones franchises, so, they’ll want to recoup that investment sooner rather than later. Cooper has been nominated twice in a row for his roles in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, so a film franchise like Indiana Jones would put him solidly on the A-list. Your move Disney, the internet is behind you.
