Today is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision for Roe v. Wade, which made it constitutional for a person to choose to have an abortion without excessive government input. Though this decision was made in 1973, abortions have continued to be a big topic of debate within political and religious conversations.
In honor of the Supreme Court decision I want to continue the conversation and help you understand what you can do to help keep abortions legal as well as make them more accessible. It is very important to remind everyone that not just women have abortions, transgender men and gender nonconforming/non-binary individuals also have abortions and need access to safe abortions.
The fight to keep abortions legal is still raging today. They are a number of conservative lawmakers that are trying to have Supreme Court repeal the decision of Roe v. Wade. Though constitutionally abortions are legal, many lawmakers have turned to fighting state laws to make abortions illegal or put my obstacles in the way of attaining safe abortions. Take for example laws in Kentucky and a handful of other states.
This biggest ways to combat those trying to get rid of legal abortions is to educate yourself and to bombard lawmakers with real science and information. A large number of lawmakers do not actually understand or know the science of pregnancy and abortions. There are a large number of resources available now that explain pregnancy and the types of abortions there are. Planned Parenthood is a great starting place as well as this video.
It is also important to recognize that even if abortions are legal they are not always accessible for everyone that may need them. Making abortions accessible for all is very important and you can play a part in that. Donating to abortion funds that help people in lower income areas or help offset the costs for individuals that may have to travel for an abortion is a great way to make a difference. One time donations are great, but recurring donations as little as $5/month can make a huge difference. The National Network of Abortion Funds is a great resource to find abortion funds in your area or ones to donate to.
If you are looking to get involved in more active way or to meet other working for abortion access think about attending events. Planned Parenthood sponsors an array of events. Take some time today to talk with people in your life on the importance of safe and accessible abortions for everyone. Know that this isn’t a fight for just today, but every day until the government has no control over abortions.
