On last night’s annual Doctor Who Christmas special, Matt Smith said goodbye to the role that made him a star and fans welcomed Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor. Well. Welcomed might be overstating it a bit. He’s got some mighty big shoes to fill, and I’m not sure anybody is convinced that he can do it. The episode, itself, was problematic in many ways. The Daily Dot does a good job of stating what was muddled, inconsistant, and just plain baffling about it. MY PROBLEM with it was mostly superficial (SURPRISE). It was our last evening with Matt Smith and he spent HALF OF IT in a rubber, old-man mask? UNFORGIVABLE. I’m not ready to let go of Matt just yet, and I wanted one last night with his goofy little face, just the two of us. Is that too much to ask? Grrrr. As for Mr Capaldi, well, I’d hate to think that I’m so shallow that I wouldn’t give him a chance just because he’s not as handsome as Matt Smith. But with the last two regenerations (Christopher Ecclestone’s and David Tennant’s), we traded up, didn’t we? This feels like we’re going back to Jon Pertwee-era Who (not that I remember). It’s sort of like replacing Ryan Gosling with Christopher Lloyd half-way through a movie and expecting us to still care about the character. Did you watch? What did you think? And what do you think of Peter Capaldi?
