As the news of the historic ruling on Prop 8 dominated much of the late day news cycle, President Obama, who promotes himself as a “fierce advocate” for gay Americans, remained silent and gave no comment yesterday. It seems the best the LGBT community rates is a statement from an unnamed White House source saying: “The President has spoken out in opposition to Proposition 8 because it is divisive and discriminatory. He will continue to promote equality for LGBT Americans.” Really? That’s odd because I clearly recall that gay activists had repeatedly implored President Obama to advocate on our behalf to no avail during several state battles that saw marriage equality as an issue on the ballot and activists created a petition and practically begged the president to instruct his Justice Dept to file a legal brief against Prop 8 but those pleas also fell on deaf ears (although that same Justice Department had no problem defending the discriminatory DOMA policy in court). The paltry response from the White House on the Prop 8 decision is being noted but the White House spin should also be questioned on its very veracity.
