Stragedy: When strategy ends in tragedy. Especially when the very strategy devised to avoid the car wreck leads straight to it. Latest example is VaR – ‘Value at Risk’ – a methodology designed to monitor Wall Street’s exposure to risk. Blind reliance on it led to financial ruin according to Joseph Nocera’s recent NYT magazine cover story.
Graspirational: When aspiration is within reach, ie populuxe. But this fever is more craven than its sister-bug affluenza, since ‘grasp’ signals a desperation that rules out any classy aspiration.
Winterval: All the Christmas holidays bundled into one. Not only the religious (Ramadan, Diwali, Hanukkah) but also the neopagan (Winter solstice) and secular (New Year’s Day). According to Wikipedia Winterval was coined a decade ago by Mike Chubb, of Birmingham City Council, and was immediately denounced by priests as ‘fundamentalist atheism’.
