Choreographer Jamal Sims‘ first-ever documentary, When The Beat Drops – a World of Wonder film produced by Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, and Jordan Finnegan – takes an inside look at bucking, a dance subculture born out of majorette routines, and the QPOC dancers behind it. Over the weekend it won the Outstanding Documentary Jury Award at the Frameline42 Festival in San Fransisco. Says the jury foreman:
“In arriving at our decision, there were so many factors to consider. We discussed craft and originality in filmmaking, the entertainment value, the social impact, and the representation of minority identities. Ultimately, the film we chose feels well-balanced in its craft and beautifully touches on a variety of subjects and covers themes of diverse expression and gender amongst men and diverse body types and centers queer people of color on screen. It gives access to a subculture unknown to most people, yet the film was constructed in a way that gives wide appeal. It is with great pleasure that we give the Outstanding Jury Award to… When the Beat Drops!”
Said Jordan Finnegan and Jamal Sims in a written statement:
“On behalf of all of us who worked so hard on this film, we want to thank you to everyone at Frameline42. It is an honor and we will forever be grateful for this distinguished award.”
