To win her last two Oscars, Sally Field beat out Jane Fonda, Jessica Lange, Vanessa Redgrave, Sissy Spacek, Jill Clayburgh, Marsha Mason, Judy Davis, and Bette Midler. That makes the likes of Amy Adams, Helen Hunt, Anne Hathaway and Jackie Weaver feel just a tad less daunting. It’s hard not to root for Sally Field. There’s something so lovable, tiny, and bright about her. Still, she has the ability to turn in performances that are deep, dark, and fearless. Check out both of her acceptance speeches – yes, the “you really like me” one for Places in the Heart, and her first, less manic one for Norma Rae – if for no other reason than to see how the pace, tone, and fashions of the Oscars have changed over the last 30 years.
