Growing up I loved Mary Tyler Moore, but I truly related to Valerie Harper’s Rhoda Morgenstern. I had the chance to meet her in the ’90s. She was a delight. Warm, funny, soulful, and generous. Somehow it came up that I was from New Hampshire. She said she had just spent the summer there performing her one-woman show about Golda Meir. (I love it when big stars just keep on working.) She went on and on about how beautiful the state was, and then exclaimed “There are so many Dunkin’ Donuts there!” Maybe it was her delivery, but it made me laugh out loud and love her even more. News today of her terminal illness has made me soooo sad. Funny how characters from the “boob tube” can touch us so deeply. I know, I’m getting to be an old, nostalgic sap. But her announcement gives her a curtain call – a chance for fans to let her know how much we love her. Tweet Valerie here.
