WOW leaders Randy and Fenton went to the Mariah Carey concert at the Staples Center over the weekend and couldn’t wait to talk about it on the phone when they got back to their homes. After the jump, read how that conversation went down.
RANDY: Well, what did you think?
FENTON: I loved it.
Me too. And I can’t stop comparing it to the Madonna concert.
Me too. Total opposite. Madonna had the better dancers, but Mariah had the better voice.
Exactly. And Mariah was real, all vulnerable and real and totally connected to the audience.
While Madonna…
The reviews I read have been harsh, it’s like they want her to be some sort of packaged machine instead of real.
While Madonna…
Mariah’s hair is insane. Probably none of it is hers.
And always blowing in the wind. She must have had strategically placed fans in every imaginable place. At one point she reached out to a real fan in the audience but the wind prevented her, nearly knocked her down.
I’m surprised it didn’t rip off the little that she was wearing.
I loved it. There was so little of it – all bra and panties and a diaphanous thingie. Occasionally she went off for a costume change and came back – in bra and panties.
Hot.
Madonna’s dancers were hotter. Some of the moves were a bit Weird Al Yankovic meets Yanni.
Did you really care?
No. I didn’t care how tacky it was. Actually I was surprised at how moved I was. Those cheesy songs had me tearing up.
Because she’s real, and not perfect and not polished. She’s messy AND doing DIVA on top of that. What about the “crazy” voice? I love that….
Is it real or is it Memorex? Its was like the shriek of a hurricane. I could imagine all glass windows within a five-mile radius just exploding.
…She even had to take her earphone out whenever she did the “crazy” voice, because the sound of her own voice would deafen her!
I liked the way she talked to the audience; just casual chit chat. It was amazingly intimate for a stadium concert. How about when she told off that guy in the audience for smoking.
Realness! Mariah giving us realness.
The set was very Art Deco. Loved the MC logo and also the enormous obelisk that descended spelling out MIMI in flashing lightbulbs. People might call it tacky, I say it was exuberant.
Yes, I loved that there was a staircase and she worked that staircase! Diva 101! Always demand a staircase on your set. Did you buy a T-shirt?
Yes! Two! And a mug!
I loved all the merchandise and all her fans! Very Long Island! It’s great to see young people get dressed up to see a concert!
But those girls were sooo nasty. The ones in front of us were humping the stair railing, even each other, when that nasty Busta Rhymes was on. It was very frightening.
Female chauvinist pigs!
I loved the rollercoaster footage at the beginning of the show.
That was great, it reminded you of how crazy a ride her life has been, she has had a crazy life.
Madonna invokes the book of Revelations and Mariah takes us on a rollercoaster. Interesting.
Yep, she is totally under-appreciated, isn’t she?
Totally.
People don’t seem to take her as seriously as they should.
It’s probably because of the butterflies and rainbows, but the girl is deep.
And it’s not just that voice, it’s the entire life. Epic.
OMG, are you thinking what I’m thinking?
OMG. Totally.
We should try and make a film about her?
It could be amazing.
