See, I’m a bit conflicted here.
If you’ll recall, Victoria’s Secret found itself in hot water last November after Ed Razek, chief marketing officer of parent company L Brands, said that he didn’t think the lingerie brand’s annual fashion show should feature “transsexuals” or plus-sized models because “the show is a fantasy.”
That did NOT go over well. Like, AT ALL. In fact, Victoria’s Secret was pretty much cancelled, both figuratively and literally (as they did not put on a show this season as organisers attempted “to work on branding”).
But now its been announced that Razek is suddenly stepping down, and that the company recently hired its first openly transgender lingerie model, Valentina Sampaio, 22, for a photo shoot.
So…. yay for progress? Or boo for cynically realizing what a mess they made of things and doing too, little too late?
News of the announcement also attracted overwhelmingly positive feedback from other celebrities and queer rights groups. GLAAD trumpeted the move as a positive step toward equality. Transgender actress Laverne Cox took to Sampaio’s social media to congratulate the model. “Wow, finally!” Cox wrote.
No doubt Sampaio is a gorgeous woman and a wonderful asset for the company, though. Check out some Instagram shots below.
