For two weeks we’ve been in the ancient Mayan city of Mérida, Yucatán, visiting our daughter and two-month-old grandson. Despite its nearly intolerable heat and disfiguring mosquitos, Mérida seems to have become a kind of mecca for smart expatriate Americans who, refreshingly, are virtually ignorant of pop culture minutia and stared blankly at us on the several occasions we mentioned Justin Bieber at get-togethers. Pictured here are Blossom and Mel, two such expats choosing to live south of the bordom. Mel is a former Milwaukeean and Blossom is her partially blind service dog for whom she has a prescription and takes everywhere in a baby stroller. Stranger still, the two perform a comedy act together whenever and wherever they can. But we got even more interested in the duo when we discovered they also sell handmade goods on Etsy under the name Talented Bitches. It was like finding out there really is a Jezebel. (Photos: ss)
