Adam Lambert, recently having more fun as a blond, we hear, showed off a new tattoo on his forearm in a Twitter post yesterday. The tat reads, in Latin, “Musica Delenit Bestiam Feram,” which translates as “Music Soothes the Savage Beast.” What’s interesting is that somebody took the trouble to translate the text into Latin from its original English. The quote comes not from Shakespeare, as you might expect, but from the English playwright and poet William Congreve (1637-1708) in his play The Mourning Bride. The original line is, “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast.” But the word “breast” is commonly misquoted as “beast.” Probably because “breast” makes some twits giggle.
