Oh, I always had such a crush on Thomas Dolby. With those pillowy lips, floppy blond hair, and British accent, he was the perfect mix of nerd lord and New Wave humpmonkey. And what a genius! Looking at his videos 30 years later, it’s clear the man single-handedly invented steampunk! My favorite song of his was never “She Blinded Me with Science.” No, no. I far and away preferred the dreamier “Europa & the Pirate Twins.” God it takes me back. Kenneth in the 212 agrees: “Although ‘Europa’ wasn’t a huge hit, something about the lyrics, the catchy drum machine beat, the harmonica solo by Andy Partridge of XTC and the Old Hollywood video kind of made this the quintessential New Wave song of the era. (Bonus kudos for producing three of Prefab Sprout’s classic LPs.)” Enjoy.
