A few weeks back I had the opportunity to catch Dan Bern at the Little Room at the Largo. The show was by far one of the best I have ever seen. The name “Little Room” definitely says it all. The atmosphere was similar to a small coffee shop, with amazing acoustics and no more than 35 people sitting at small wooden tables with a one-foot-high stage in the front. Bern played an amazing acoustic set without even needing to plug in. After several songs, he brought a few friends to the stage to sit in and help with some new, never-before-heard tunes. Among the friends were members of the indie folk band Common Rotation. I wasn’t familiar with the band or these new tunes, but I quickly started to dig what Dan and friends were putting down. The show ended and I just sat there in amazement, knowing that shows like this are a dime a dozen and that by living in LA I am fortunate to experience them. After a minute or two of bliss, Bern returned to the stage for an encore, calling up the Common Rotation crew again for one last tune – a little something we know as “Paper Planes.” After a few weeks of research and Facebook stalking of the band I was finally able to come across this gem. Sadly it doesn’t feature Dan Bern, but it does feature John DiMaggio aka the voice of Futurama‘s Bender.
So enjoy yourselves some folk-a-fied “Paper Planes,” and when you’re finished watching go out and have an awesome weekend. Why? Because summer is coming.
