First, let’s be perfectly clear: He can’t do it.
President Trump today suggested delaying the November presidential election, warning that mail-in voting will lead to “the most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history.”
“It will be a great embarrassment to the USA,” he tweeted. “Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???”
With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 30, 2020
It’s a common refrain of his lately, as he tries desperately to hold on to power as his numbers dwindle.
But… he has no power over the election schedule; moving it would require changing federal law. The Constitution states the exact date and time when a president and vice president’s term ends. There is no clause that would allow a president to remain in office beyond Jan. 20 following the presidential election.
We held an election during a Civil War… we can hold one during a pandemic.
Of course, that’s not going to stop him from discrediting and trying to defund the United States Post Office in the upcoming months. We need to be ever vigilant and VOTE IN GREATER NUMBERS THAN EVER BEFORE!
