It’s hard to believe it’s been a quarter century since Trina jumped into the spotlight, and how far she’s come since. Her Tiny Desk Concert retrospective is both fun and at times quite moving.
In 1998 Trick Daddy catapulted Trina to fame when he called her up to duet on “Nann N****.” Her verse quickly became an anthem of female empowerment and led to a record deal on the spot when it was laid down. She became known for her collabs after that, dueting with hip-hop legends Ludacris, Chingy, Yo Gatti, and Latto. Although Kelly Rowland could not join for the Tiny Desk Concert, Trina put a great spin on the original:
She also sat down with Sidney Madden for an in-depth conversation about her roots and her creative philosophy. This season of Louder Than a Riot with Madden and Rodney Carmichael “unpacks just how deeply misogynoir is embedded in the fabric of the hip-hop culture that we love.”
Congrats to the baddest bitch, the diamond princess, the rockstar!
