Lorena Borjas, a community health center educator called the “Mother of the Trans Latinx community” in Queens, has succumbed to COVID-19 Monday morning, according to the Queens Eagle.
Borjas moved to the US when she was 21. She helped to run HIV-testing programs for transgender sex workers, as well as syringe-exchange programs for transgender women taking hormone injections.
Borjas was one of 61 New Yorkers pardoned by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2018. She had been convicted of fourth-degree criminal facilitation in 1994, and had gone on to become an important community activist after serving her sentence.
Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez was one of many sharing tributes today:
Below is a nice profile of Lorena and her work from the local public television station in Queens. Rest in Power, Lorena!
