Trans Icon Kim Petras Says Being a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Was “A Huge Confidence Boost…”

By Trey Speegle on May 16, 2023 9:00 am

Grammy winning trans icon Kim Petras is the second ever trans woman to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Petras is in Sports Illustrated‘s annual Swimsuit issue, making her the second trans woman on its pages after model Leyna Bloom in 2021.

Petras told the magazine,

I was so excited when I got the call…

It’s very iconic, and a lot of very iconic people have done it before, so [it was a] big dream come true for me. It’s definitely a scary time to be transgender in America, but there’s also so much more representation than there’s ever been, and there’s so many things on the bright side.

I do feel a pressure sometimes to represent the trans community with everything I do, because I feel very blessed that I am at this point where I have all these amazing opportunities that I’ve worked really hard for and feel so happy when I hear from trans people in general that they’re inspired by me.”

Petras told People magazine, that the SI team made her feel

really comfortable…

It’s super exciting to have my Sports Illustrated cover and album announcement happening at the same time! Yu Tsai and the whole team at Sports Illustrated made me feel … like I belonged there.

I had the best time and, honestly, it was a huge confidence boost.

I am so excited that my album is coming out…

It has been in the works for three years. I’ve really sacrificed my entire life to it and have been writing these songs that mean the world to me.

I feel like it’s something that you’ve never heard from me before!”

Petras’ Feed the Beast is out June 23.
