Artist Tobe Nwigwe is no stranger to hit songs, but his 45-second political hit “I Need You To (Breonna Taylor)” is definitely hitting different, as he joins the chorus of voices demanding justice for Breonna Taylor.
The lyrics are about as pointed as they could be: “I need you to arrest the killers of Breonna Taylor and Elijah McClain, too.”
Breonna Taylor has become a cause célèbre, particularly in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. The wheels of justice seem to be slowly turning due to all the pressure from artists and the public. Via our earlier coverage:
TMZ is reporting that Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron met with the family of Breonna Taylor, and that they are now hopeful justice will be served. And even though Cameron did not say if or when he’ll charge the cops in her death, he did show a real interest in Breonna. So much so that her mother, Tamika Palmer, says the family walked out of the meeting “feeling good about the case.”
As a reminder, Elijah McClain was a vegetarian massage therapist who died at the hands of police in Aurora, Colorado:
On August 24, 2019, Elijah went to a local convenience store to buy iced tea for his brother. His sister told a local ABC affiliate, Denver7, that he was wearing an open-face ski mask because he “had anemia and would sometimes get cold.” On his way home, the Aurora Police department were called to reports of a “suspicious person” wearing a mask and waving his hands. And although he was unarmed, simply walking home and listening to music, police say “a struggle ensued.”
Tobe’s song continues to raise awareness, most recently earning him a profile in the New York Times:
