In her latest confection “You Sad,” Zimbabwean-born Australian singer Tkay Maidza is going after guys with a “small head tryna play a big boy game.” We’ve all been there!
If you’re new to her vibe, the library is open via Pitchfork:
Maidza was born in Zimbabwe in 1996 and moved to Australia when she was 5 years old. Her metallurgist father and chemist mother settled in Perth before moving east to Adelaide, where Maidza was raised around musicians. Her uncle is the prominent Zimbabwean singer-songwriter Andy Brown, and her father was also a guitarist on the side. “My family were very loud in the sense that everyone’s always singing, everyone’s always dancing, which is a cultural thing as well,” she says, describing warm memories of gatherings where her dad would play alongside other local musicians.
During the pandemic, she’s been setting up the green screen and doing her own thing on music videos, as she did in “Don’t Call Again” with Kari Faux:
She’s not all candy-colored sweetness, though, as she proved in her pre-pandemic location shoot for “Shook“:
