Pharrell Williams was tapped to curate an all-star group of contemporary thinkers, artists, and activists for TIME magazine’s issue on America’s current racial reckoning, called “The New American Revolution.”
He lined up an impressive group of thought leaders, including Kenya Barris, Angela Davis, Imara Jones, Naomi Osaka, Yara Shahidi, Tyler, The Creator, and many more. He is also scheduled to drop a Jay-Z collab called “Entrepreneur” as part of the issue.
I wanted to convey a vision of a future filled with the artists, creators and entrepreneurs who can fulfill the promise of this country’s principles. America’s wealth was built on the slave labor of Black people: This is our past. To live up to America’s ideals, we must trust in a Black vision of the future.
There’s a great story behind the magazine cover artist Nneka Jones. Her gorgeous art of George Floyd caught the eye of TIME’s art director, and she got hired for the gig!
She created an unfinished embroidery of an American flag, an apt analogy for the unmet promises of America’s lofty ideals.
