Dude, the Eagles rocked last night at the opening of the brand new Nokia Theater. Expectations were low for this antiques roadshow, but it was like one of those nights on Fire Island when the drag queens gather round the piano banging out showtunes (though no caftans, sadly). Don Henley’s voice was like Nyquil and “Hotel California” as beguiling and heady as the premise of the song itself. Every Eagle sang but it was sixtysomething Joe Walsh (then and now, below) who soared highest on “Life’s Been Good” with vocals that squawked with cranky joy. Life has been good indeed. Through the tingle and tears of the final encore – “Desperado,” of course – I even thought let’s bring back Emerson Lake & Palmer.
