Overboard – one of THE BEST COMEDIES OF ALL TIME (not up for debate) – starred Goldie Hawn as a spoiled heiress who gets amnesia and ends up believing she is the wife of widower Kurt Russell and mother to his four kids. It’s a brilliant send-up of the ’80s greed-is-good culture and one of Goldie’s best roles (which is saying A LOT). It still holds up beautifully, which is why upon hearing that it’s getting a remake, your first reaction is probably the same as mine: DON’T DO IT! LEAVE IT ALONE!
Ah, but this time, there’s a TWIST. It’s being re-imagined with the always brilliant Anna Faris and Latino superstar Eugenio Derbez… with a reversal of their leading roles.
According to Variety:
The story will focus on a spoiled playboy from one of Mexico’s wealthiest families, portrayed by Derbez, who falls overboard off his yacht. He’s then convinced by Faris’ single, working-class mom that he’s her husband.
Derbez is known to Latin American audiences for his long-running television series “La Familia P. Luche.” He starred in, directed, and produced the comedy “Instructions Not Included,” which grossed $100 million worldwide.
“The original ‘Overboard’ was beloved and the only way to bring it back is to reinvent the story in a whole new way,” said MGM Motion Picture Group President Jonathan Glickman. “Anna and Eugenio are two of the most charismatic forces in comedy whose take on the material will modernize the story for a whole new generation of moviegoers.”
What do you think? Sounds amazeballs? Let’s hold our opinion until we see it? Or NOOOOOO, don’t mess with perfection? (via Variety)
