So after four years of writing about Austin Butler, he FINALLY has a vehicle that warrants some blog space. He’s young Carrie Bradshaw’s love interest on The Carrie Diaries, of course, and even though the show is just TERRIBLE, and the acting is just TERRIBLE, and the writing is just TERRIBLE (seriously, it makes Michael Patrick King seem like Noel Coward), it’s worth watching for some of the ’80s details and to see whether he can rise above the dreck to become an actual star. I’m not sure the show has what it takes to make it. For instance, all that ’80s fashion is sort of fun, but will it still be fun in season four? Or will it be like Happy Days, when by the end of its run everybody got lazy and had ’70s shag haircuts and bellbottoms? Already, I’ve noticed that Austin seems to be outfitted in skinny blazers and Henley tees (very 2012), rather than the boxy ’80s monstrosities his character should be favoring. I wonder if that’s to make him more relatable to today’s audience? And WHO IS this audience they’re after? The teens who watch CW have no connection to Sex & the City. They don’t know Carrie Bradshaw from Carrie Nation. And their parents don’t give a crap about teen dramas. So who do they think appealing to here? Did ANYBODY watch it? And what did you think?
