Everybody’s favorite artist, if not just for his art, had the top-selling painting yesterday at Sotheby’s in New York. The New York Times reports that one of Andy Warhol’s Liz paintings (from a series of 13) was sold by Irving Blum, a Los Angeles art dealer who had owned it for 40 years. Blum had been guaranteed an undisclosed amount of money (around $10 million) by Sotheby’s regardless of the auction’s outcome. Estimated at $9 million to $12 million, the painting brought $12.6 million, including Sotheby’s fee. That figure easily beat the paltry $5.2 million Gianni Versace’s estate got for a Lichtenstein. The 73-year-old Liz Taylor can still sell a picture!
