Can you hum the theme music for the CBS nightly news? Probably not. But it doesn’t matter anyway, because it’s been writ anew for kooky Katie Couric’s September 5 debut behind the anchor desk, which along with the entire set also has been refreshed. Since 1962, when Walter Kronkite was reading the news, there’ve been four themes, none of which we can recall. This new one, by “My Heart Will Go On” Oscar-winner James Horner, replaces the current one that’s been solidly unmemorable since ’91. Meanwhile, we’re thinking why spend a ton of cash for a new theme when CBS could just get the rights to the peppy 1918 song “K-K-Katy” (probably already in the public domain) that’s just as old-timey and folksy as Katie herself.
