Barry Jenkins dropped teasers earlier this year, and now his adaptation of The Underground Railroad, the alternate reality novel by Colson Whitehead, has a trailer in advance of its May 14 premiere on Amazon Prime.
Starring Chase W. Dillon, Joel Edgerton, Amber Gray, Thuso Mbedu, and Aaron Pierre, the story revolves around a version of history where the 19th century Underground Railroad was a literal railroad, rather than a network of abolitionists.
The novel follows Cora Randall as she tries to get to freedom in the antebellum South. She escapes from slavery on a Georgia plantation after hearing about an Underground Railroad, only to find out it’s “an actual railroad full of engineers and conductors, and a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil.”
Cora is pursued by Ridgeway the bounty hunter, who is obsessed with finding Cora after he was unable to recapture Cora’s mother Mabel “Nothing was given, all was earned. Hold on to what belongs to you.”
