Terrible episode. Terrible, terrible. It’s a little late in the season to have a stand-alone episode set in the ’90s featuring a young Derek and some girl we’re never going to see again, isn’t it? There are way too many (figurative) balls in the air for us to spend an HOUR on a doomed romance featuring two actors we aren’t invested in. Yes, young Derek was adorable. Ian Nelson is the actor who played him. He was the tribute from District 3 in the Hunger Games, remember? And it was sweet when he nibbled on his girlfriend’s ear. But you know what would have been sweeter? ETHAN nibbling on DANNY’S ear. Or ISAAC nibbling on SCOTT’S ear. Or ANYTHING, ANYTHING other than Stiles sitting and listening to some boring story. The whole episode felt like one of those back-door pilots that NEVER work. Like the time Jess went to find his father in California on Gilmore Girls. KA-THUNK. This season is SO hit and miss. Executive producer, head writer, and show creator Jeff Davis is so full of his own mythology right now that he seems to have forgotten what made the show a hit: HOT GUYS ACTING BROMANCY WITH EACH OTHER.
