Mitt Romney won the Republican Florida primary last night and he won it big with nearly half the electorate voting for him (46.4%). It’s a convincing win that knocks Newt Gingrich back down to size and restores Romney to front-runner status. Romney seemed already to be looking past the primary race and ahead to the general election in his victory speech in Florida with repeated attacks on President Obama. In one of his more pointed barbs, Romney declared, “Leadership is about taking responsibility, not making excuses. Mr President, you were elected to lead. You chose to follow. And now it’s time for you to get out of the way.”
For their part, it looks as though the Democrats want to highlight just how similar to Republicans they really are, and have apparently decided that all that “Hope” and “Change” crap is just so 2008. In 2012, it looks like issue-oriented differences will take a back seat to full-blown character assassination. Hold on to your hats, this is going to be one nasty election season!
