A photo of a shirtless beer-guzzling band of rowdy boys partying down in a Georgetown bar wouldn’t usually cause that much of a stir, unless of course, those bare-chested beer drinkers are President Obama’s chief speechwriter, Jon Favreau, and spokesman, Tommy Vietor. At a time when the Gulf oil crisis is reaching fever pitch, news that President Obama’s aides were reportedly making a very public display of their penchant for partying did not go over too well. Several residents of the Gulf Coast were already displeased with pictures of President Obama at a White House party with Paul McCartney while at the same time maintaining a seemingly hands-off approach to the unfolding oil spill disaster; and this new round of party photos served only to feed that fire. Political sites from Politico to The Washington Post carried the story and many questioned the judgment of the presidential aides who allowed themselves to be photographed engaging in a shirtless bacchanal during the worst environmental crisis in our country’s history.
While this regrettable little episode shouldn’t cause that much collateral damage to their boss – cute boys sans shirts, is never a total negative in my book – but it definitely didn’t help Obama’s image either. Gallup is reporting that Obama’s Job Approval numbers have fallen to the mid 40’s, the lowest rating of Obama’s entire presidency to date. (Photo via FamousDc.com)
