Grab your tissues before watching this glorious LGBTQ short-film-disguised-as-a-car-commercial, you’re going to need them.
Renault Clio’s latest commercial ostensibly celebrates a vehicle “30 years in the making” but really tells a tearjerking love story between two women who meet in childhood and continue their relationship through many ups and downs.
As a woeful cover of “Wonderwall” plays, we meet an English couple sending their red-headed daughter off on a trip to Europe, where she befriends a young French girl. The two play on a swing, eat ice cream, giggle, and become BFFs. Years later they reconnect as teenagers, and things quickly turn romantic.
When the father of the British girl discovers love letters between the two, he puts an end to the relationship. Years later – yes, the commercial is incredibly still going – the French girl marries a man, while the red-headed girl watches with a fake smile on her face. Inside, her heart is breaking.
But fear not! The marriage ends, the women reconnect (yet again!) and there’s a marvelously satisfying ending.
Watch. Please. It’s better than Carol. It needs to win ALL the awards. (Can it get an Oscar? PLEASE?)
