LeighBowery.com describes its idol this way: “Larger than life Australian, club host at Taboo, fashion designer and, later on, a life model for Lucien Freud and performance artist/singer with Minty. For many years he was the face of ’80s London nightlife. Bowery famously sported an outlandishly different look each week at the club – ranging from melted candle wax on his bald head, or a pair of wings – to simply crawling along the floor naked.”
He made frequent trips to the States, becoming a fashion and performance role model for the club kids in Manhattan. In 1993, Thairin Smothers (now a WOW producer) shot this film of Bowery “giving birth” to a full grown woman on stage at Wigstock in New York’s Tomkins Square Park. See for yourself.
