A Trump-appointed federal judge in Texas issued an order that would suspend Mifepristone, an abortion drug widely used across America.
District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk‘s ruling represent one of the biggest blows to abortion rights in since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer.
Biden slammed the decision, calling it
another unprecedented step in taking away basic freedoms from women and putting their health at risk.”
He warning that the FDA is being undermined by
political, ideological attacks.”
In a separate lawsuit brought by Washington state attorney’s general, a judge ruled Friday that the FDA could NOT restrict access to Mifepristone.
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said of the Texas judge’s decision,
I believe that the Biden administration should ignore this ruling. What (the courts) are currently doing is engaged in an unprecedented and dramatic erosion of the legitimacy of the courts.”
Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden tweeted,
This devastating ruling has no basis in law and will ban the most common method of abortion in EVERY single state.
President Biden can and must ignore this ruling and keep mifepristone on the market and accessible for every woman in America.”
Kacsmaryk’s ruling is in hold for a week now, but if stands, it will end the two-decade-old approval of the first drug in the medication abortion process. This attempt to overrule medical professionals at the FDA over the use of a drug that has been safely and effectively used for so long, marks a new darker chapter in post-Roe politics in the US.
Republicans so far have been mostly mum about the ruling, but this what the GOP wants; to control women’s bodies.
There is sure to be public outcry since this medication abortion pill is used in more than half of US abortions.
This devastating ruling has no basis in law and will ban the most common method of abortion in EVERY single state.
