Surprise! 18 people in one Texas family tested positive for COVID-19 because of a surprise birthday party.
On May 30 a single relative, unknowingly infected with COVID-19, interacted with seven family members at a surprise birthday party who later tested positive.
Ron Barbosa didn’t attend the party hosted by his nephew, for his daughter-in-law turning 30. Barbosa, who is married to a doctor, said he and his wife refused to go to the party due to safety reasons. A total of 25 people attended.
That nephew was infected, and had a slight cough and before the party and played golf with family members who also attended the event.
Barbosa, a volunteer EMT said that his family is around each other constantly,
“It wasn’t that long. It was only a couple of hours. But during that brief time, somehow the other 18 family members are now infected with COVID.”
Among those infected are two young children, the two grandparents, their cancer patient daughter. The daughter attended the party and then visited her parents, who are in their 80s. The three are now hospitalized.
Frank and Carole are high school sweethearts and have been married 67 years.
Frank is in the ICU and is on life support. Barbosa told said he is close to being put on a ventilator.
“My dad’s hanging on by a thread.”
Barbosa is using the phrase “Frank Alert” to raise awareness about the need for more blood plasma with COVID-19 antibodies.
“If you’ve recovered… go donate your plasma.”
Other than his sister and parents, Barbosa said that his family is mostly recovering.
It’s sad. Wearing a mask isn’t just about you. We know how the virus is often unknowing transmitted to the most vulnerable. No debate. Wear a damn mask.
