It’s really a damn shame that James didn’t get that ring and a firm commitment from Brandon Davis a lot earlier (or at all), because Grandma Barbara sold the family manse the other day. The Beverly Hills house, called The Knoll, on more than 10 acres, went for somewhere in the mid-$40-million range to Eric L. Smidt, president of Harbor Freight Tools USA. (Original asking price had been $70 million.) Barbara and billionaire husband Marvin Davis bought the house from singer Kenny Rogers in 1984. The 11-bedroom, 17-bathroom, three-story Georgian manor once belonged to Dino De Laurentiis, but was built for Lucy Doheny Battson widow of the oil heir. It has three floors, two guesthouses, a 35-mm screening room, two pools (one out, one in), a gym, a spa, a tennis court, a tennis house with sunken bar and living area, and two wine cellars. Now if James wants to spend any time in one of The Knoll’s pools, he’s going to have to bone up on freight tools.
