The new queer comedy Down Low begins with Lukas Gage giving Zachary Quinto a handjob.
Actor Rightor Doyle‘s starts off his directorial debut with a happy ending. Gage is Cameron, a sex-positive twink/ masseuse, Quinto is Gary, a rich zaddy who hasn’t ever had a full-on same-sex experience. (He’s also dying.)
After their encounter, Gage’s character helps Quinto join a queer dating app with screen name “Lad and Dad”. They go off in search of search of trouble and there’s an accidental death.
Cameron and Gary then try to figure out what to do with the dead body. There’s Gary’s Ambien-addicted neighbor, Sandy (Judith Light) and Buck (Simon Rex) is hired to help discard the body.
The film is co-written by Gage and Phoebe Fisher. Quinto told Deadline,
It’s fun, it’s outrageous, it’s unapologetic.”
Gage says it is
morbid at times.”
DOWN LOW: A hysterical single-set dark comedy that takes the term “be gay do crime” to the next level. Zachary Quinto and Lukas Gage have magnetic, tender chemistry as an ailing newly-out man and an assertive sex worker. Gage is a star and a damn great screenwriter! #SXSW2023 pic.twitter.com/xfDPvgoazm

Variety called it the gay version of The Hangover, while The Hollywood Reporter‘s headline screams,
“Frenetic and Shallow”
But director Doyle says,
There is a beating heart underneath all of the outrageousness that is first proposed when you start watching the movie.
There’s something so fresh about their outrageous sense of humor mixed with this sort of deeply feeling, wanting, unsettled, love that is sort of beating underneath it.”
Down Low is currently screening at SXSW Festival with no release date announced.
