Well, right up to the halftime show Lady Gaga kept up her poker face on whether she would do something subversive. She started off singing God Bless America, segued into Woody Guthrie‘s This Land Is My Land and then literally flung herself into the performance of her career diving off the roof of the stadium. Before the show she told Michael Strahan in an interview ,
“I have an opportunity with this performance to show a different part of this country that those who think that they are so different from me and my fans — to see that our hearts are really the same.
It’s like the mecca for performers. We have 13 minutes with the world.
When you play a dive bar, my philosophy has always been that you should play it like it’s The Garden. So now, I’m going to play [the Super Bowl] like it’s a dive bar. I’m going to do it my way.”
And she did.
